Pet-supply chain latest addition to redeveloping shopping center
CEDAR RAPIDS — Pet supply chain PetSmart has signed a lease for a location in Westdale shopping center, to open in the second half of this year, officials announced Wednesday.
The store will be to the east of Younkers near the 29th Avenue entrance, in a newly constructed building.
“PetSmart will be a valuable addition to Westdale Mall as well as to southwest side of Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities,” aid Lisa Rowe, Westdale general manager and vice president of retail for Frew Development Group, which is redeveloping the site of the 37-year-old mall.
The store sells pet food and pet products and services including pet training, grooming and adoptions.
The Phoenix-based PetSmart touts itself as the “largest specialty pet retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets.” The company employs approximately 55,000 people, operates approximately 1,500 pet stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, and has and 204 in-store PetSmart PetsHotel dog and cat boarding facilities, according to a company profile.
The chain has a store on Collins Road NE.
The PetSmart announcement comes days after announcing Ross Dress for Less will open a location at Westdale.
Westdale is in the midst of a $90 million redevelopment. The shopping center has 14 stores and another four have been announced as opening in the future.
